Aramid is a synthetic fiber known for its exceptional strength, widely used in the manufacture of bulletproof vests and other applications requiring high strength.

The History of Aramid

The name aramid is an abbreviation for "aromatic polyamide." It was first developed at DuPont by Stephanie Kwolek in the 1930s. By the 1970s, it was already being used commercially to replace steel in racing tires due to its lightness and strength.

The Properties of Aramid

  • Lightweight and Stiffer than Glass: Aramid is known for its lightweight yet stiffer than glass, making it an ideal material for applications requiring structural rigidity.
  • Highly Tear and Cut Resistant with Excellent Ballistic Properties: It offers exceptional tear and cut resistance, making it valuable for the manufacture of bulletproof vests and other protective equipment.
  • Chemical Resistant but Acid Sensitive: Aramid is generally chemical resistant, but can be sensitive to strong acids, requiring special precautions in its use and maintenance.

Maintenance Tips

To prolong the life of aramid, it is recommended to store it at room temperature in a dry place, wash it at low to medium temperatures and avoid the use of softening agents that could alter its properties.
